Portland Head Light has burned since January 10, 1791, commissioned by George Washington and paid for by a young federal government that had barely begun to collect taxes. It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and it anchors the seaward edge of a harbor that has never stopped working.
Casco Bay carries a nickname earned in the nineteenth century: the Calendar Islands, from an old boast that the bay holds one island for every day of the year.
